An oil by the Hungarian painter Armin Glatter(1861-1931)
This painting is evocative of his sensitive and sensual depictions of women and shows clearly the influence of the golden age of Dutch masters. The composition most probably dates between 1890-1900 and employs pronounced chiaroscuro illuminating the figure against a dark, featureless background.
The palette relies on vibrant ochre-yellow drapery complemented by a cool blue head wrap, painted with fluid brushwork and controlled highlights. The work displays natural age-appropriate varnish oxidation plus a prominent horizontal stretcher line impression across the upper third of the canvas.
Overall a fine example of a craftsman at work.
