Portrait of a boy

Charming painting of a 6 year old Leopold Hewetson Landmann, he was the son of the Revd L N Landmann a naval chaplain who himself grew up to be a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy.

The portrait in crayon and gouache was painted by
a Belgian World War 1 refugee between 1914-1918. Although unidentified the delicate rendering of facial features, soft shading and naturalistic proportions demonstrate a highly competent artist. Soft blending
and chalk/pastel strokes capture skin tones, light
reflections and atmospheric depth against a muted olive grey background.
